Best for foodies: 12. Chalet Gourmet, Morzine, FranceIf you’re the kind of skier who thinks all the physical exercise is just an excuse to eat more, Chalet Gourmet will prove a delight. A hundred-year-old Savoyard farmhouse converted into a 21st-century eco-chalet, the house is coolly stylish; cow-skin rugs, leather sofas, sleek log-burners and six light, airy bedrooms — two of which are family suites. But the food is the real star; home-made preserves and freshly-baked bread at breakfast, lavish five-course dinners and bakes that Mary Berry would be proud of for post-piste afternoon tea.

The co-owner and chef at GourmetSki (gourmetski.com), a converted farmhouse in Montriond in the Alps, trained at Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK. He uses that expertise to create six-course dinners for guests, which may include crab and ginger linguini, roast guinea fowl and stacked shortbread with strawberries and cream. Many ingredients are local, free range or organic, and jams and chutneys are homemade from the owners' own produce.
